Olympics Essay
The Olympics have been a big part of this world since ancient Rome when the gladiators fought in the coliseum. According to legend, the ancient Olympic Games were founded by Heracles, a son of Zues. The first Olympic games for which we have a written record was held in 776 BCE. In 1896, more than 1,500 years after the ancient games, the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens as a reminder that the ancient games originated in Greece. The modern Olympics have changed the games because they are a lot more interesting and because sports like bobsledding have attracted many more fans.
First, the modern Olympics started in 1896 and have been gaining popularity ever since. The first Olympics in Athens had nines sports on the program including, athletics, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, weightlifting, swimming, tennis and shooting. Twenty eight years after those Olympic Games came the first winter games in Chamonix. At those games, six sports were on the program including, biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, luge, skating and skiing. At the first modern Olympics in 1896 only men were allowed to compete, in 1900 this changed when women made their debut at the Paris games. (multimedia.olympic.org) Athletes were given awards for their performance. These awards were the classic bronze, silver, and gold medals (theolympicmuseum.com). As interest in the games grew, more and more events were added to the Olympics. Some of these include figure skating, ice hockey, alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing and bobsledding (theolympicmuseum.com).
Interestingly, bobsledding was added to the Olympics in 1932. Bobsledding is a difficult sport that draws a lot of attention from fans. The United States hosted the Olympics the same year that the first manmade bobsled-track was built in the US (hickoksports.com). Bobsledding is winter sports in which two teams of four make timed runs down a narrow twisting banked ice track. The United States bobsled team practices in Vancouver, Canada (hickoksports.com). The country that is predicted to win is usually the United States. The United States also holds the most gold medals in bobsledding. Other good bobsledding teams include Germany, France, and Russia. The strongest competitors in bobsled are Steve Langton, Curt Tomasevicz, Justin Olsen and many more. They are the best because they have the most experience and have the best times (bobsled.teamusa.org).
In conclusion, throughout history the Olympics have become very popular. They are popular because they appeal to more fans and because more sports have been added making the viewers want to watch the Olympics more often.
